Jan Matejko's love for Poland's history
and tradition, and his extraordinary capacity for work, gave Europe many
vast narrative paintings. The Prussian Homage, The Battle of Grunwald,
and The Union of Lublin - kept alive the memory of his nation's greatness
and gave Poland new insights into her past as well as a sense of the individuality
of her culture.
