The City of Krakow

Wawel Royal Castle National Collections of Art - Wawel 5, Tel: 22 51 55, Fax: 22 19 50
The museum is situated on the limestone castle hill - the former seat of Polish Kings. The oldest Gothic parts are remains of the 14th-century castle erected by King Kazimierz the Great. The castle was given a Renaissance character by King Zygmunt the Old in the early 16th century. Another remodeling, this time in the Baroque style, took place at the end of the 16th century. Permanent exhibitions include:

  • historic furnishings of the castle: Gobelin and arras tapestries, furniture, stoves
  • canvases by Dutch, Flemish and German Masters- portraits of Polish Kings and their families

Crown Treasury and Armoury:

  • regalia and royal insignias, military accessories of the 13th to 18th centuries, goldsmithery of the 17th to 18th centuries, collection of helmets and shields

The Lost Wawel:

  • an exposition presenting the earliest settlement on the Wawel Hill

The Orient in the Wawel:

  • a unique exposition presenting antique oriental armour, costumes, art and weapons

Dragon's Cave:

  • a geological curiosity of the Jurassic age - a huge cave, said to have been the lair of the legendary dragon of Wawel Hill

Cathedral Museum - Wawel 3
Artifacts from the cathedral treasury constitute one of the most splendid collections of this kind in Poland. In the 19th century the cathedral treasury began to function as a national historical museum. Its collection contains souvenirs of Polish Kings and heroes, liturgical objects, exhibits associated with Pope John Paul II. The museum's seat in the chapter house beside the Royal Cathedral, where tombs of Polish Kings and national heroes are located.

The oldest national museum in Poland, in existence since 1879 when a painter, Henryk Siemiradzki, donated his painting, Nero's Torches, to the city, and the City Council voted to establish the National Institution with its seat in the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall). Since that time the museum has gathered one of the richest collections of Polish and foreign art in Poland. A significant part of its collection is on permanent display in branches around Krakow and at Zakopane.

Czartoryski Museum - Street Św. Jana 19, Tel: 22-55-66

  • Collection begun in the late 18th century by Izabela Czartoryska née Fleming. After World War II the State took over the collections. In 1991 Prince Adam Karol Czartoryski, in the name of the family, established the Czartoryski Foundation under the auspices of the National Museum in Krakow
  • The collections on display include: Western European painting (Italian, German, Dutch) from the 14th to 18th centuries; the most valuable pieces, including Leonardo da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine" and Rembrandt's "Landscape with the Good Samaritan". European decorative arts including medieval Limoge enamels, Meisen porcelain, Italian faience and military accessories
  • temporary exhibitions are held in the former building of the City Arsenal

  • founded in 1994, thanks to the Kyoto-Krakow Foundation, started at the initiative of Andrzej Wajda and Krystyna Zachwatowicz
  • the permanent exhibition of the National Museum's famous collection of oriental art

  • presentation of Japanese culture, courses of Japanese language, ikebana and Japanese calligraphy

  • collections are devoted to the life and works of an outstanding Polish composer
Museum of History of Krakow - Administration: Rynek Główny 35, Tel: 22-80-68
Opened in 1899 as a branch of the Municipal Acts of the City of Krakow. Since 1945 it has existed as an independent entity. It organizes traditional Krakow events, such as the procession of the Lajkonik, and the Competition for the Prettiest Krakow Christmas Crib held on the first Thursday in December.

Museum of the Archdiocese - Street Kanonicza 19, Tel: 21 89 63
Established in 1994, the museum is housed in two 14th-century buildings joined by a lovely arcaded courtyard. Regular exhibition: painting, sculpture and decorative art. Part of the exhibition is the room in which Karol Wojtyła, the present Pope John Paul II, lived for seven years. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions promoting religious art.
Museum of Archaeology - Street Poselska 3, Tel: 22 75 60
The oldest of this kind museum in Poland - in 1850 the Museum of Antiquities was founded by the Krakow Scientific Society. One of the most interesting in the collection is the famous stone statue "Światowid" (a Slavic god). The regular exposition is made up of exhibits related to prehistoric and medieval Małopolska and Egyptian mummies. Thematic temporary exhibitions are regularly held and in summer the "History of the Main Market Square" exhibition is open to the public.
Museum of Ethnography - Pl. Wolnica, Tel: 56 56 01
In existence since 1911, the museum is located in the Kazimierz City Hall, where collections are housed and a permanent exhibition "Polish Folk Culture" is open to the public. Other exhibitions include: interiors of Cracovian and Podhale houses, craft workshops, folk costumes, jewelry, traditional and contemporary folk art and exhibitions of folk traditions. In the branch at 46 Krakowska St., temporary ethnographic exhibitions are prepared for the public every few months. The museum collection includes exhibits from various regions of the world: Indonesia, Central Asia, Africa, South America.
Museum of Polish Aviation - Street Jana Pawła II 17, Tel: 12 78 55
The museum is located at the former Rakowice airport, where in 1910 an airplane landed for the first time in Krakow. The museum was established in 1963 at the initiative of members of the Krakow Aeroklub. Airplanes, helicopters, airplane engines and pre-war planes of Polish production are on display.
Museum of the History of Photography - Street Józefitów 16, Tel: 34 59 32
Housed in a newly-restored little palace, the museum organizes new exhibitions once a month. There have been shows devoted to Jan Bułhak and Fox Talbot, and exhibitions presenting the achievements of the first Krakow photographic institutions.
Pharmacy Under the Eagle Museum - Pl. Bohaterów Getta 18, Tel: 56-56-25
The museum is located in former pharmacy run during World War II by Józef Pankiewicz - the only Pole to remain in the Jewish Ghetto. The pharmacy was at that time a contact point and place for the Jews. Pankiewicz described the tragedy of the ghetto in his book, Pharmacy in the Krakow Ghetto. The exhibition "Krakow Ghetto - Płaszów Camp" is currently on display.
Jagiellonian University Museum Collegium Maius - Street Jagiellońska 15, Tel: 22 05 49
The museum is housed in the oldest Krakow University building, the seat of the Krakow Academy (founded in 1364). The former professors? apartments and ceremonial halls, which still hold the most important events in the life of the University, such as sessions of the senate, election of the rector, promotions to assistant professorships, granting of honoris causa doctorates, are open to the public. The museum collections, dating back to the 15th century include: the rector's sceptre, a collection of globes including the golden globe known as "Jagielloński", astronomical instruments, among which is the priceless Arabic astrolabe from 1054, physics and chemistry apparatus, a collection of 15th to 19th century tin utensils, antique coins, portraits, sculptures, ancient art and mementoes of famous students of the academy including Nicholas Copernicus.
Pharmacy Museum of Collegium Medicum - Street Floriańska 25, Tel: 22 05 49
The museum owns collections related to the history of pharmacy and Polish pharmaceutics: alchemical utensils, old pharmacy glass containers, herbal medicine equipment, laboratory and pharmacy interior from 1810, old prescriptions, and other medicinal documents. It also has a priceless collection of pharmacy mortars.
Museum of Geology - Street Senacka 3, Tel: 22 19 10
The earliest holdings date from the time of the Physiocratic Commission formed by the Krakow Scientific Society in 1865. The collection includes paleontological, paloebotanical, minerological, lithological-sedimentological pieces and other exhibits. The museum also owns one of the largest collections of meteorites in Poland.
Museum of Natural History - Street Sebastiana 9, Tel: 22 89 37
The earliest collections date from the time of the Physiocratic Commission formed by the Krakow Scientific Society in 1865. The origins of the museum's holdings were two private collections of birds and invertebrates. The museum has been further enriched by entomological collections, and herbariums of native plants. The most famous exhibit is the specimen of a 20,000-year-old rhinoceros of the Pleistocene age found in Starunia in 1929.
"Rydlówka" - Museum of Polish Art Nouveau - Street Tetmajera 28, Bronowice Małe, Tel: 37 07 50
Władysław Tentmaker's country manor, which was the setting on 20 November 1900 of the most famous Polish wedding party - of Lucjan Rydel the poet with the peasant girl Jadwiga Mikołajczykówna. This event was described by Stanisław Wyspiański in his play Wesele, which immediately found a place in the classic Polish national repertoire. Three chambers of the house are open to the public: the dance room, wedding room, and the alcove, in which Cracovian costumes, paintings of the Polish Art Nouveau movement, souvenirs of the wedding party participants, and original furnishings from that time are on display.
Museum of Zoology Institute of Zoology, UJ - Street Ingardena 6, Tel: 33 63 77
Currently housed in the Collegium Biologicum building, the beginnings of the museum reach back to 1810, when the Zoological Collection was created from the former Natural History Collection. The permanent exhibition, "Fauna of the World," contains around 6,000 species. At the Grodzka Street branch of the museum are exhibitions: "Butterflies of the World," "Exotic Shells" and "Fossils."
Salt Mine at Wieliczka - Street Daniłowicza 10, Wieliczka, Tel: 78 73 02
An-over-900-year-old salt mine. Already in the 11th century it was called the Magnum Sal. For many centuries the mine was a primary source of income for the Polish crown. The mine is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and is still in operation. One of the oldest sections of the mine is open to the public (a trail of about 3 km), where tourists can marvel at the ancient galleries, tunnels, an underground lake, alters and holy figures carved out in the salt chapel, the ballroom, and old mining equipment. The "Kinga" specialist sanatorium is also housed there.
Museum of Krakow Salt Mines at Wieliczka - Street Zamkowa 8, Tel: 78 32 66
The museum has two permanent exhibitions: underground on the third level of the mine (at the depth of 130 meters, in a tunnel 1,5 kilometers long) and above-ground in the Salt-mine Castle, whose origins reach back to the 13th century. The museum owns the largest collection of mining equipment, especially horse treadmills, which is unique in the world. The permanent collection is complemented by regularly organized temporary exhibitions.
